Mediocrity: Settling Will Be Your Demise
An article posted by Jeremy
“The big win is when you refuse to settle for average or mediocre.” ~Seth Godin
Society says you have to be mediocre; you have to conform to societies norms.
Let’s be honest, who wants to be average? Not you!
You literally have the key to unlock your potential, so use it. When you unlock your potential and refuse mediocrity, the world of opportunity opens.
Potential is in everyone, even you. How you use it…now that’s up to you.
Discussion
You have a golden opportunity starting now to refuse mediocrity. Now I ask you, why do you think it’s so easy to give in to mediocrity or being average?

Being criticized by society is a biggie. I believe that is the biggest reason why people enter and stay in the vicious cycle of mediocrity.
It's easier to blend in the with the crowd than it is to stand out.
As Seth Godin puts it, you have to stand out in order to be remarkable.
Hi Jeremy,
from my point of view its the comfort zone that people would not like to come out of.
More over the fear of failure and being criticized by society is also another reason.
Hey Jeremy,
Well, there's a few reasons why people settle for mediocrity, the most obvious being, they simply don't know ANY better than that. Mom's did it. Dad did it. Everyone that they've ever been connected to settled for what society told them they could half.
Another reason some people settle, is because it becomes difficult for them to do anything else. Society has a way of making things a tad bit difficult for some individuals. Oftentimes what happens is the individual get tired of fight harder than his or her peers, and then decides to settle for the box that they've been told is theirs to sit in.
Then their the another reason some choose mediocrity; after awhile it becomes very much comfortable, and before they it become they know it, life has literally passed by.
All of these are good valid reasons to stay in mediocrity... I mean, it makes sense that one would choose it. However, a person has to.... how can I put this... "snap out of it" in each case. They have to seek out pass what they've been taught, ignore how difficult society makes it for them, and never, ever get comfortable in mediocrity.
They must step outside that box, wrap it back up, and hand it back to the one that tried to put them in it.
Good points Dee,
"They have to seek out pass what they've been taught."
This is where many people fail.
I'll definitely have to cover that in another post! Appreciate all the social media love today as well man! I'm happy that my content is resonating with you.

In addition to what has already been said, I think that there are three other factors.
1 - Giving in to mediocrity can be the result of fear, specifically fear of rejection. Going mediocre is (often) playing it safe.
2 - Ease. It is easier to phone it in than to really work at developing something special.
3 - Speed. People become impatient and want to crank out products as fast as possible. Great endeavors can take time, though. The more impatient you are, the more appealing mediocrity is.
Great points Cris, especially point #2.
It's easier to pack it in and give in to mediocrity. I believe it's something society teaches everyone at a young age.
Meaning, you have to do this at a certain age or you have to do that at a certain point. It's what I refer to as the society mindset.
Giving in to what everyone else is doing and thinking that's what your suppose to do.
The key is to learn to block out what society says you have to do. March to the beat of your drum even though society frowns upon people who do that.
I would argue that all successful people march to the beat of their own drum.
I'll talk more about that in another post. Thanks for sparking an idea Cris! =)

Hey Jeremy mediocrity is just a lack off fire, but I guest all people use their fire in different ways.
Blessing J
Hey Llody,
Glad you stopped by. That is a great way of looking at mediocrity. I find that a lot of people don't use their fire to fuel their progress.
It's left sitting idle.
People always want to know how successful people become successful. I believe a lot of it has to do with motivation and the hunger to progress one's skills and talents.
If that fire is channeled in the right way the skies the limit!
You know Jeremy, this is what I think...
I think people reach a point where they think they have it all figured out. They really don't so what ends up happening is they crash once they realize that they don't...then they settle for being average.
They get a new spark then they repeat the process again.
I think taking a student like approach and honestly learning and growing is the only way.
Great stuff here man. Have a wonderful weekend in the Yay!
I have to agree with you JK.
Taking a student like approach and really embracing the learning aspect is the only way to continually progress.
What I tend to see a lot, especially in the work space, is that people learn their role and stay the course. They never deviate and more often than not they are the ones who hate their jobs.
Meanwhile, the people who are constantly learning new things and implementing are the one's that get ahead.
That type of mentality (learning approach) should be embraced in every aspect of life.
As always, thanks for stopping by JK!
