Trust Your Heart.. it Knows Where to Go

inspiration quotes 300x200 Trust Your Heart.. it Knows Where to Go

“If it doesn’t feel right…don’t do it.” ~Oprah

I was watching an old video of Oprah speaking at Stanford’s commencement ceremony and during her speech she said the above quote.

during her speech she outlines different situations in her life where she had to trust her heart. She even goes as far as to say every right decision she has ever made came from trusting her heart.

Every wrong decision she has ever made came from not trusting it.

With that being said, a few weeks ago I was faced with a situation where I had to trust my own heart.

My experience

A few weeks ago I had a job offer with a marketing company. Having gone through the initial interviews I was feeling on top of the world. That feeling  eventually came to a screeching halt.

As I was driving home from an all day interview (11 hours of walking around soliciting to businesses…not the type of marketing I want to do) I had this feeling in the pit of my stomach.

I wasn’t happy or excited about my new job.

Later that night, I did a lot of reflecting. My mind was saying just do the job because it’s a paycheck and my heart was saying don’t do it because you know you’ll be miserable and it doesn’t feel right.

Needless to say, I listened to my heart.

And I’m happy that I did.

The moral of the story

If something doesn’t feel right, don’t do it. Trust your heart and you won’t be steered wrong. Your heart somehow already knows what you want and what’s right so listen to it!

If you haven’t watched Oprah’s commencement speech here it is. I was inspired by it and I know you’ll be too.

Hey Jeremy,

I think there's a fine line between something not feeling right and us feeling like we don't want to do something. a VERY fine line. I think the line is easily determined, however, when we listen to ourselves and we're honest.

In this post you pointed out the truth that we have to listen to. If we don't, we set ourselves up for failure that we don't want.

Great stuff here man.
I'm off to check out O's speech.

Hey Jk,

That's a good point about how fine that line between something not feeling right and us feeling like we don't want to do something.

Funny that you mention that because that was one of the things I was battling when I was reflecting.

The only reason I knew it was my heart talking to me was because I had that feeling in the pit of my stomach. A feeling hard to explain, but when you feel it you know 100% that something isn't right.

And as Lady O puts it, "if it doesn't feel right...don't do it"

That video is inspiring!

Hey Jeremy,

Loved this post man! Lady O is one of my faves as well!

I also agree 100% with the importance of following your heart. Usually the heart rarely ever steers us the wrong way. And if it does, I'm not so sure that it was the heart that we were listening too.

The heart tends to give us the truest answer to those life's problems that puzzle us the most. It's a gift that many often miss out on because they don't know how to determine if it's their heart that's speaking or their personal desires and wants.

Great post my friend. Hope you're enjoying your weekend, and I look forward to chatting with you soon.

Hey Deeone!

Completely agree with you. Our hearts have a knack of being right. I can't think of a time my heart ever steered me wrong. Listening to Oprah's speech really opened up my eyes to that.

I literally sat there thinking if I had ever been steered wrong by listen to my heart. I came up with nothing.

You're right, it's a gift and we all should embrace it more.

Glad you stopped by and gave your 2 cents. Appreciate it. Look forward to chatting with you as well.
